Senator Mitchell to Head Gala Scholar-Athlete Games
Night in Providence
Senator George Mitchell will be the featured speaker at a June 11 "United States Scholar-Athlete Games Launch" ceremony at the Providence Performing Arts Center. The ceremony will also include the honoring of a number of Rhode Island individuals for their contribution to the scholar-athlete ideal.
Senator Mitchell will deliver the "launch address" for the 2008 Games, to be held June 28 - July 5 at The University of Rhode Island. Senator Mitchell will also be inducted into The Institute for International Sport's International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame. The June 11 evening will include a special post-speech "carnival" where attendees will have the opportunity to greet many of the honorees; shoot baskets against Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch; receive parenting advice from Institute founder and Executive Director Dan Doyle, author of "The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting;" and converse with other experts in the fields of sports psychology and sports medicine. The PPAC refreshment stand will be open for the entire program.
The schedule for the program is as follows:
5-6 PM: Private reception for Senator Mitchell and other honorees in the PPAC foyer.
6-6:45 PM: Senator Mitchell delivers the United States Scholar-Athlete Games Launch Address.
6:45-7:00 PM: Attorney General Lynch will formally announce and congratulate the other honorees.
6:45-8:15 PM: The Scholar-Athlete Games "Carnival" in various sections of PPAC.
